About MILÁN INTERNATIONAL

“A nation is not conquered until the hearts of its women are on the ground; then it is finished, no matter how brave its warriors or how strong their weapons.”

“Milán International School Scholars is Genius, Ambitious and Long Overdue!” The Honorable Dr. Adelaide Sanford, Elder, NYC Regent

OUR WORLD VISION AND MULTI-LINGUAL MISS ION (c) (TM) 2011

My + Inter + Lingual + Ácademic + Network = MILÁN!

Behind every successful girl there is a Brave, Believing, Compassionate, Communal World! I AM WAKAN. “SACRED.

“Learning another language is very important for all of us, particularly those of us who lost our language in the middle passage and in chattel slavery. Because when you lose the language you lose certain essences of the culture.   So it is important to know another language.   It is very possible and the best way is conversationally.”  –  Dr. Adelaide L. Sanford, Elder Scholar/Mentor

The Literacy of Women

WE can help change this!

IMAGINE . . .   OUR  WORLD VISION:    A world where our girls learn that they are valuable human beings,”wakan” (sacred), capable of learning and teaching multiple languages, and are inspired to reach their greatest goals. We are Milán International School Scholars (MISS)!

MISS embraces girls from ALL nations and cultures, with its specific goal to empower and  enrich the lives of the dismayed, disenfranchised, disconnected, dyslexic, and descendants of the Trail-of-tears, Transatlantic middle-passage diasporas, and casualties of civil wars in Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia and Eastern Europe to become multilingual, multicultural, global learners, leaders, teachers and compassionate scholars.

What I THINK of myself determines my destiny!

At Milán International School Scholars we understand that regardless of the fears (False Evidence Appearing Real),  obstacles or challenges placed in front of  a girl/young lady/woman, what she “THINKS” of  herself determines how far she  will go in her life’s journey.Frustrated with writing- istock Becky Rockwood

OUR MULTILINGUAL MISSION:   At Milán (My Inter-lingual Ácademic Network) International, our focus is on teaching our girls to be resilient,  highly literate, financially astute, culturally competent, building character, self preservation, and  motivating young women to always believe in themselves, and to be in harmony with their positive thoughts and actions.

As a language immersion community where scholars are taught 100% in the target language,  Milán International School Scholars is beginning its linguistic voyage with Spanish and English.  Our goals include bringing additional interlingual journeys to include, but not limited to:  American Sign Language, Amharic, Arabic, Bosnian, French, Kiswahili and Korean.

Girls cannot achieve in an unwelcoming, hyper-masculine, hostile environment.  Milán International School fully embraces the ideals of the National Coalition of Girl’s Schools (www.ncgs.org) and the United Nations’ efforts to uplift and assist girls/women around the world, one girl at a time (www.girlup.org).

Milán International School Scholars also supports the transformative work being done by the non profit organization VITAL VOICES (www.vitalvoices.org) as they invest in the possibilities of what women can do on a daily basis and shall do in the future for the benefit of all humankind.

Our DirectoraMISS is a supporter of the legacy established by the great culturally responsive educator, Dr. Adelaide L. Sanford, Ph.D and the Adelaide Sanford Institute and their work to achieve educational parity, and identify and promulgate educational excellence for children of color (www.sanfordinstitute.org).

We welcome your thoughts on multilingual literacy, cross-cultural communication and success, culturally congruent and exemplary linguistic pedagogy, socially responsive models and the importance of educating our girls in an immersion school where they know that they are valued, “wakan” (“sacred” in the language of the Lakota Native American).
